OUR MISSION:
LIVING THE WORD - SPREADING THE WORD

To accomplish our Mission we commit ourselves to the Five Gifts of Discipleship given in the covenant that God makes with us in Holy Baptism
To LIVE among God' faithful people
We recognize that fellowship with other people of faith is supportive both of the development and growth of our own faith, as well as our mission and service in the world. As the Body of Christ we seek out, gather and support one another in our discipleship. That's why our fellowship at Living Word is so important to us.
Our fellowship includes Men's and Women's Groups which meet regularly, Sunday School for children and Adults which meets weekly, and a wide variety of social, youth, service and athletic events that bring us together frequently.
In a world that often seems torn by mistrust and empty of meaning, Living Word is a place where positive relationships are made, hope declared and faith put into practice.
To HEAR the Word of God and share in the Lord's Supper
Each Sunday we gather under God’s Word of compassion and hope and around the altar celebrating the saving power of Jesus the Christ in Holy Communion.
Although our worship is typically Liturgical in structure, (following the format and ancient practice of the Christian Church), our style is relaxed and informal. Worship at Living Word includes a blend of both traditional and contemporary music, and has the flavor of a big family gathered around a table to celebrate an important life event. (Which is pretty much what is happening!)
And of course, the family would not be complete without children! There is a nursery available, but we love to have children participate and we try to make it engaging for them as well.
Forgiven and healed, strengthened and nurtured by fellowship, we are sent to live out our faith, allowing God’s Word to be ALIVE in and through our daily lives.
To PROCLAIM the Good News of God in Christ through word and deed
As the Word was made flesh in Jesus, we who make up his body “en-flesh” and incarnate his presence to the world by our actions. Being the Body of Christ, we are naturally committed to doing those things that Jesus did.
Our primary objective is to proclaim and witness to a particular understanding and practice of the qualities, characteristics and attributes of God’s Kingdom which scripture makes known to us, including: Justice – Mercy – Humility - Servant hood and Sacrifice rather than to impose our will upon others.
Living Word is active in the Arlington Community, contributing our time talent and resources to those things that look like Jesus.
To SERVE all people following the example of Jesus
Jesus set a powerful example for his disciples by kneeling down to wash their feet and then instructed them to follow his example: "...whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.’ Our actions are characterized by Love of neighbor as of self.
Our service in the community includes recognizing others, even those very different from ourselves, as neighbors worthy of our respect, concern and compassion.
In addition to addressing the needs of our neighbors in Arlington, we also have a special relationship with Trinity Ministries which includes helping provide life-changing feeding, sheltering, clothing, and counseling, in Midtown Memphis.
To STRIVE for Justice and Peace in all the earth
We are called to stand with the powerless and the “least of these”, whom Jesus demands that we treat with the same consideration, compassion and concern, with which we would treat our Lord himself: "Then the righteous will answer him, “Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?” And the king will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.”
